A Transparent Custom Mural Pricing Guide

One of the first questions business owners ask me is: “How much does a mural cost?” Well… it depends. Mural prices vary on many factors, mainly depending on the size and complexity of the design. As a professional mural artist working with businesses and homeowners throughout Ohio, I want to serve as a resource to you during your commissioning process. This short guide will walk you through exactly what affects the cost of a custom mural and how to budget for one confidently.
Why Murals Cost What They Do.
A mural is a custom, site-specific piece of art designed specifically for the client for a particular location. When you invest in a mural, you are paying for far more than the hours spent painting. You are investing in concept development, professional-grade materials, surface preparation, project planning, and the experience required to execute a large-scale artwork that will live publicly for years.
What Affects the Cost of a Mural?
Custom murals prices are based on several important factors that impact time and logistics.
1. Wall Size: Larger walls require more planning, paint, and execution time.
2. Level of Detail: The more detailed the design is, the more time is needed to paint.
3. Wall Surface: A porous brick wall will require more prep and multiple coats of paint.
4. Equipment: The rental of a scissor lift, scaffolding, or other equipment will be factored into the quote if needed.
Example: A highly detailed exterior mural on a large brick wall that requires a scissor lift will cost more than a small, low detail, accent mural on an interior wall that uses a step ladder.

How Much Do Murals Cost Per Square Foot in Ohio?
While pricing varies by artist and project, here are realistic ranges for custom commercial murals in Ohio:
• Low detail with some illustration: starting at $20 per square foot
• Medium-detail murals: starting around $35 per square foot
• High-detail murals: $45+ per square foot
Some muralists charge hourly instead they typically range from $50–$70 per hour with some going over $100 an hour.

How Do You Get an Accurate Mural Quote?
Since every project and wall is different, the best way to get a precise mural quote is to:
1. Send photos of the wall with wall dimensions and location
2. Share your vision, or inspiration
3. Schedule a discovery call or meet with the artist
The muralist on the discovery call will discuss your goal for the mural, your target audience, timeline, budget, and installation logistics. Sharing your budget upfront will allow your muralist to design a personalized mural that delivers impact while staying within your investment range. Just remember, for the most part, pricing is customizable.

What does the payment schedule look like for a mural?
Professional commercial and residential mural projects typically follow this structure:
• Non-refundable design deposit (applied to final cost)
• 50% deposit before painting begins
• Remaining balance due upon completion
